Hair Design

Step 1
section the hair from ear to ear, and use the curlers on the bottom half of the hair and hairspray
Step 2
Crimp all the top section of the hair
Step 3
Back comb all the top of the hair to create height
Step 4
grip the height and twist the rest of the assess crimped hair into a bun.
Step 5
Use some of the curled hair which is at the top and french braid all across the top of the curled hair to separate to two textured sections

I enjoyed doing the different textures of the hair but I don't think they go well together maybe if I ric rac the bottom half instead of curl but I think it would take too long in my hair for my partner too do as it is too long and thick. I am not very fond on this design but I could change a few things I didn't like but for now its at the bottom for my final designs.

Hair Design

Step 1: Brush the hair out and take a small section from the front of the hair at the headline.

Step 2: Grab a V shaped clip and weave a section of hair in and out like an 8 shape till their is no hair left to weave and secure it with a clip. Place the straighteners on the weft of  hair for a few seconds and leave for it to cool. Do this to each section that you want curled. leave to pieces of  hair out either side of ear and curl them with the straighteners.
Step 3: Leave the front section in the clips, section the middle of the hair from ear to ear and  start to back comb it with a comb to add height. curve the hair over and brush the top over so you cant see the back combing and then secure it with clips. Pull the middle parting piece down further and clip it down to give it a heart shape.

Step 4: tie the rest on the hair into a twisted bun at the back of the head and secure it with clips. Undo the rig rags at the front and twist them around into 3 buns, 2 either side of the head and one big one at the front.

This is the end result, I think I have done well to create this design and am happy will the final results, especially the front part with the spiralled flower ric rac, that is my favourite part of the hair. I am not sure on the rest of the design but I still like the heart shape. We will have too see what the other designs look like, but I think I have done well to execute this hair design.

All around the head plaiting

Elizabethan Braids & Plaiting
I love the detailing of the braids, I want to try and practice a braid that wraps around the head like a crown.

I have had help with trying out the wrapped around braid which was quite hard to do in my own hair as I couldn't reach the back. With practice I could make it better and tighten the braid.

I want to try and make the plaiting look like a crown at the front of the hair in my own design, I will have to practice the technique on my Katy head and show my partner how I would like the plait to look in the hair.

My Hair Designs for final assessment

 My Final Hair Design Ideas

Design 1

My First design I mixed different Ideas and different techniques into it, I have used the idea of Ric Rac to give that frizzy texture that you see in the Elizabethan Portraits but as I liked the idea with creating flowers out of hair I have used that idea as it reminded me of a modern high fashion look. The Heart shape structure of the hair but with smooth hair, I will just back comb the hair to create the shape as I think my hair will be thick enough for it. I have included a twisted bun at the back which is what the Elizabethans did with the rest of the hair at the back and I will leave two pieces either side of the hair which I will curl which I have seen some hair down in the portraits and it looks curly.

Design 2

My second design used the ideas of a rounded crimped height which is similar to Elizabethan portraits with their curled/frizzy padded heights. I also used the curling technique for the bottom half of the hair. I have twisted the rest on the hair of the height into bun with the hair still crimped I this will get rid of any assess hair left. I have will be adding a French braid between the two different hair textures, the braid was mostly in the peasants, but I have placed beads into the braid which would have been worn by upper class and royalty.

Design 3

I think this is my favourite design out of them all, but I will be trying all of them out first before I chose what I decide which one I want for my final design.
I want a Dutch braid all around the head with added pearls similar to Design 2, I want to add two back combed/padded heart shaped height with a plait down the middle in between them also with pearls added around and in the plait.I want the heart shape to have curled pieces over the heart shapes. These ideas are taken from the heart shape and curled texture from the Elizabethan portraiture, also adding hair adornments like pearls. I will be adding the braid and plaits to incorporate the lower class in that era.

These Portraits of Queen Elizabeth is the one that inspired my ideas for the designs.

Also Modern Elizabethan Ideas the inspired my designs.

My Contemporary Elizabethan look

My Contemporary Elizabethan look.

I have chosen this image for my contemporary hairstyle, it caught my eye as two braids have been  a big trend this summer so I thought this could be a good contemporary and 'In Now' look.

Double french braids / french braided pig tails:

Step 1
I had sectioned the hair right down the centre parting.
Step 2
I started on one of the sections and began a dutch plait down the hair and came to a stop 1/4 away from the bottom hair line and secured the bottom with clips, I then repeated the plait in the other section.

Step 3
I started crimping the bottom of the hair that was left out of the plaits starting with small sections and from the bottom of the hair.

I would like to re-do this look as I think it would look good if I crimped all the hair first then done the two braids in the crimped hair but still with hair the hair out. But here are some inspirational images that made me want to go that extra step further.

Love this, need a micro crimper!:

Wig Making

Wig Making

So I have read that most Elizabethans would wear wigs, so I got a little curious and decided to find out how wigs are made. Here are some videos I have enjoyed watching and have learnt something new by watching them.

Single Strand Double Knot Ventilation Instruction & Tips
Found on Youtube

I have also found one that shows the wig making process in slow motion which is very cool.

I have learnt this process is called 'venting' and it is made with a German needle which knots the hair onto some Lace.

Flower's made out of hair

Flower's made out of hair

I have seen this images by scrolling through Pintrest and I loved the idea of creating flowers into the hair I am going to have to have a try of these and design them into the hair.

I have also found a You tube video which shows a way how to create the flowers with a plait.

Elizabethan hair practice on model.

Elizabethan Hair Practice on Model.

I have created a hair design adding crimping, plait and bun all into one. I have chosen a heart shape structure which will be created without padding but just back combing, the back half of the hair will be scrapped back into a pony, plaited and wrapped round into a bun.

Step 1
I started by sectioning the hair from ear to ear and criming the front half.
Step 2
I then parted the front down the middle and started back combing the right side and curled it under and pinned it, this created one side to the heart shape. I the repeated this onto the other side of the hair.
Step 3
I then scrapped back the back half and placed it into a bobble. I then started to plat the hair and added another small bobble on the end to secure it.
Step 4
I wrapped the plat around and into a bun and secured it.

Elizabethan and Modern Hair Shapes

Elizabethan & Modern Hair Shapes

Following the Elizabethan hairstyles there are certain trends that they pioneered and is inspiring modern hairstyle for catwalk, fashion and lots more. I have found a few of my favourite Elizabethan looks old and modern.
The same hair shapes are occurring throughout the Elizabethan period, there are a lot of symmetrical heart shaped  and rounded shapes in a lot of their portraits.

Modern Elizabethan hair shapes

Using the same type of shapes but also doing the in different ways,
I love this first one  as it isn't on top of the head but its still that idea of big rounded symmetrical shape with the hair, it also includes the frizz, plaiting and the light red hair.

The second image incorporates the big heart shape hair, this is also symmetrical, red hair and frizz.

The heart shape is what I am drawn to, I like the way it looks and am going to interoperate this into my own end  look,  I would create this look by using a prop/rat or I would use back combing in my design as my hair is quite thick and long in length it wouldn't need a rat/prop but doing the practices with my partner will help me decide if I need one.

How to create the Elizabethan Height

How to create the Elizabethan Height

Step 1: Using the crimpers start to crimp the hair making sure you get all of the root the the end, in even sections.
Step 2: after the hair is all crimped, half the hair then make a section in one half from parting to ear. Start from the bottom and back comb using a comb and then work your way to the top

Step 3: Curve the hair over creating a poof like mouse ear and secure it with grips.

Creating the poof the other way we have used a prop (rat) which was created using nude tights which has been stuffed with tissue.
Step 1: section the hair from part to ear, the section it again from the start of the ear to the part and french braid it and secure it this will be an anchor for the prop.

Step 2: Clip down the prop and and secure it with clips.

Step 3: Smooth the hair over the prop and tuck it under, make sure you secure the hair with grips.
The finale look you can tell the difference in shapes, the left side is the backcombing and the right side is the prop. I like the left side better as it has more shape to it, this is what I want to use in my final look. If could have done the right side better by adding backcombing to it but I was just practcing different ideas.
